Down at our pub, the Dolphin, to meet a friend and celebrate his birthday and it happened to be folk night… which was a bit confusing because usually it is the first Monday in the month but tonight was the second Monday… it turns out that last Monday was the Sidmouth Folk festival in Devon and most of the Dolphin folk nighters had gone down there so Dolphin night was postponed to tonight…
So the folkies gathered around us and my husband was inspired to go home and collect his bodhrán and his cajón so he could join in. Our friends haven’t known us that long, and i was explaining that my husband used to be in a band called Celtic Shambles – Celtic because of the music they played and shambles because of the way they played it. They used to practice in the pub for free and in return would ‘host’ the folk night. Celtic Shambles has shambled off in different musical directions, one to play in a rock band, one to sail round the Mediterranean, one to join another band and one to have a baby, but folk night continues at the pub.
We reminisced about Shambles and i thought what a good band it was and what fun we all had being associated with it!
