I came across a letter from the organiser of the first book club I belonged to, letting us know what was on the future reading list. This was back in the year 2000, and the group was organised through the local library by the librarian. We had quite a large group of about a dozen, but not everyone could attend every time. I have to say I don’t remember reading all of the books on the list, there are no authors listed, and in fact I’ve had to look up who wrote some of them because I don’t even remember the book itself!
Here’s the list:
- The Swimmer – there are several books called The Swimmer, some published after the one we read, one by Roma Tearne published in 2010, one by David Haynes published in 2013, and the one we must have read was a short story by John Cheever ,published in 1990
- Kiss and Tell – again there are several books of this title, by Fiona Walker, 2011, S.C.Wynn, by Layce Gardner & Saxon Bennett, and Jacqueline Greene, all in 2015, plus others, but our book club read was by Alain de Boton, 1996
- The End of the Affair – Graham Greene
- Knowledge of Angels – Jill Paton Welsh
- Arms and the Woman – Reginald Hill
- Charlotte Gray – Sebastian Faulkes
- Snow Falling on Cedars – David Guterman
- The Talented Mr Ripley – Patricia Highsmith
- The Man on Platform 5 – Robert Llewellyn
- Time’s Arrow – Martin Amies
- The Celestine Prophecy – James Redfield
- The Persian Pickle Club – Sandra Dallas
- Birdsong – Sebastian Faulkes
There certainly is variety in what we read – I have a feeling we didn’t all read all the books, I think we chose several, read them and then made our comments and shared our opinions!
