Stalker books

I read a little thing on Facebook, a little comic thing, about how weak-willed book-lovers are, and how difficult it is to resist temptation! Once you have books it is then almost impossible to let go of them, even when they aren’t to your taste or you’ve never read them and never will! I responded with the other side of the coin – when books haunt you and do their utmost to come into your possession:

I also have come across stalker books… they see you just passing their shelf and know they want to be in your embrace… suddenly they are everywhere – on a display table, on a glamorous poster, in a pile at the till, in the bookshop window, even on advertisement hoardings and posters at the railway station… You try and distract yourself by rushing home and reading a newspaper/magazine/ web-page, and there they are flaunting themselves… and suddenly, you can bear it no longer and you rush back to the bookshop. Sometimes, cruelly, they are out of stock, and then the stalker book becomes stalked…
