My friend Marianne McAleer is the most wonderful singer (and a jolly nice person too!) and she has just sent me details of her latest video of a beautiful Irish song called ‘In The Month of January’. It’s a sad tale of a young woman cruelly treated, I have no idea how old it is – the earliest recording was in 1955.
Marianne recorded it in Worlebury Woods, a plantation on what was an ancient Iron Age hill fort. In the nineteenth century a vicar thought it would be lovely to have some trees on this promontory pointing out into the Bristol Channel so he planted some – desecration, and destruction of an important historical site which added to it’s already fragile state caused by quarrying. However, it is now protected – although some vandalism still occurs,
