I fancy something on toast…

Since my husband has started making bread again eating it and having it toasted is a great temptation, and one I give in to – but only at meal times. If I wasn’t strict I would be cutting a quick slice every time I went into the kitchen!

I mentioned that my son gave me a Fitbit (his old cast-off one) and as well as me finding it more interesting and useful than I had imagined, I also receive details from the company of all sorts of things, and lots of healthy advice. A lot of the healthy tips are to do with exercise and keeping fit as you might imagine, but I also receive theFitbit magazine which has all sorts of articles, including food and diet… Well food is just about my favourite thing – buying it, cooking and preparing it, eating it, reading and writing about it…

In this weeks’ magazine, going back to toast, there was a list of different suggestions of what you might put on toast for variety, taste and  what my mother-in-law would have called ‘goodness’. It’s written by Becky Duffet,  a writer, editor, and cook.

Each suggestion had a little write up, and at the end of this I’ll post the link for you to follow, but here are their nine suggestions, and my thoughts:

On your toast you could put….

  1. Avocado + radishes + bean sprouts – I first came across avocado as a breakfast item when I was in the States; then it sat under an egg – but this sounds jolly tasty! I like radishes, not so keen on bean sprouts and if I bought a tub I would have to think how else to use them!. But avocado and radish, a winning combination I think!
  2. Hummus + cucumber + tomato –this sounds nice and refreshing – I actually don’t eat tomatoes now, but they would be very tasty and also, as the article says, the vitamin C in them assists the iron in the chickpeas  to be absorbed into your blood
  3. Almond butter + strawberries + blueberries – this wouldn’t be my choice, but for people who like their berries it must be a yummy combination
  4. Hazelnut butter + bananas + cocoa nibs – again, I’m sure this would be delicious and healthy for some, just not for me!
  5. Cottage cheese + peaches + fresh mint – mint and peach, maybe, I like cottage cheese so this could be a winner!!
  6. Ricotta + tomatoes + fresh basil + black pepper – classic combo!
  7. Smoked salmon + sprouts + everything spice – I guess I could use some of the bean sprouts I bought for suggestion number 1 here… and spice, which… well, apparently everything spice is an actual thing! I guess it’s an American thing and it sounds good: ‘it includes poppy seeds, toasted sesame seeds, dried garlic, dried onion, and salt…’  Yes, it sounds good!
  8. Skyr + bay shrimp + lemon + dill – I think I would swap the skyr for cottage/cream cheese, it sounds a little wet for toast
  9. Mushrooms + egg + thyme – if you like mushrooms then great – I have really gone off them for some reason, and thyme is not a herb I like at all – it always seems musty to me, even when picked fresh!

Thank you Becky Duffett!
