Our favourite Am-Dram group, the Bleadon Players present dramaticals of various genres three times a year, two plays and a magnificent panto. Their last play, a farce, was an absolute tour de force! I saw it twice and wept with laughter on both occasions. Considering they are an amateur dramatic society, and all have day jobs, they are stunningly good and you’ll be sure of a great night out if you’re lucky enough to be in the area (the village of Bleadon, down the road from Weston-super-Mare)
As ever with these type of events, funds need to be raised, and as well as the tickets sold and the refreshments, there’s a raffle. We never win, but we always buy tickets to show support, and husband duly put his hand in his pocket and bought a few strips. Imagine our surprise when we actually had our number drawn out of the hat (it wasn’t an actual hat, it was a bag or maybe it was a plastic pot, I don’t remember except it wasn’t a hat!) Husband strode to the back of the hall and came back with a bottle of rosé wine. I like wine more than he does so it was very kind of him to choose it. However, if offered wine I would choose red – or I would chose white, and would never opt for rosé unless it was all there was, and in this case, it was all there was.
I put it in the fridge and it was only a couple of weeks later that I fancied a glass of wine and the rosé was all we had. We don’t drink a lot of wine at home so it was quite unusual that we had any, more that it wasn’t my preferred red. Never mind, I thought, it will make a change. To my surprise, it was very pleasant. I think with it being such warm weather and it being chilled, it suited me.
Now coincidentally, the pub has a beer on which I don’t really like. I am a great beer drinker, and mostly I will drink whatever is on the pump, although I do have my favourites, The beer on at the moment, while a perfectly fine, well-kept pint, is really not to my taste. There’s Guinness which I like, but I wouldn’t have a couple of pints; there’s a pale ale which isn’t bad but it’s expensive and very chilled. I had a sudden inspiration, I would have a rosé! And so it is, now I drink rosé, and I have quite surprised myself! If a new beer comes on which I like I will revert, but I think I may very well keep the odd bottle of rosé in the fridge!
