The sound of reindeer hooves

It’s technically Christmas morning, but as I haven’t been asleep, and Santa hasn’t visited yet (fingers crossed that he does!!) it’s still Christmas Eve. We had a nice evening meal, son, daughter and us, with crackers and paper hats, then daughter had to go to work, so we went to the pub for an hour to wish friends the compliments of the season.

I still cling to the magic of childhood Christmas’s and still try and pursue some of our family traditions – some of the decorations on the tree are from when I was only a few years old, for example! If we have been good boys and girls, Santa may share a few gifts in the stockings we leave out, and our Christmas dinner tomorrow will be turkey followed by pudding and there will be mince pies too.

As ever I think back to past Christmas Eves, especially to my childhood with my very dear sister. We shared a bedroom and would try our best to go to sleep as quickly as possible – pretty impossible for me who has always had difficulty going to bed early! No matter, I did eventually drift off and lo and behold, I had a lovely full stocking in the morning! When my children were small, I remember walking them round the village, picking leaves and grass to feed the reindeer, trying to wear them out so they too would fall asleep quickly. Now, as I mentioned, we go to the pub!

So, I must help Santa’s elves before I too hop into bed, I might just have one more small glass of something as I write a little, then I’ll snuggle down, my ear half cocked for the sound of reindeer hooves on the roof. Goodnight and Happy Christmas!
