I think I mentioned a little while ago that although I write a lot of short stories, I nearly always share them here – well, of course, I do! The problem with that is that it counts as publishing in short story competitions,, Because of this it’s been a while since I entered one because of course, in the comps’ eyes, they have been published. So, I have decided not to share my stories here, but I will no doubt still mention what I have been writing, how I came to write it, and maybe what inspired me.
I have just finished writing “A pleasant rendezvous”, now I have to find a competition! I have also mentioned that sometimes I use the random words generated by the word puzzle, Octordle as a prompt. I completed one of the puzzles today and the answers were tree, grubby, secret, mint, chalk, mass, joke, battle, wistful, and coal. Yes – ‘grubby secret’ were actually consecutive words in the puzzle! I didn’t have a big think, sometimes it’s better just to launch straight into a challenge like this – I wonder if this is a left over from exams at school when we were given a topic to write about? I never found those challenges difficult, not bragging, but even at that age it was easy for me to rootle in my brain and come up with something.
I won’t share my story, as I explained, but it was about an un-named character in a Mediterranean restaurant which was very, very crowded mostly with jolly folk enjoying a birthday party. They are squeezed onto a table,, but quite happy to be there, unlike a couple who are seated behind them. It’s impossible not to overhear the intriguing conversation, despite the racket. The unseen couple are having an intense conversation, and one seems to be threatening the other! Now I have to find a competition! And now I have to start writing some more to enter other comps! Fingers crossed 🙂
