I was so lucky to receive gift of a night’s accommodation in a lovely hotel in a favourite nearby town for my birthday. Some, if not many, people fail to see the delights of Bridgwater – which I have written about many times! We visit regularly, to wander about, go to the Blake Museum and the church of St Mary, to visit our favourite restaurant the Green Olive, and also to dine at The Old Vicarage Hotel. It was accommodation at the latter which I received from my daughter and we were really looking forward to going.
We booked a room and dinner last week; unfortunately, husband had a heavy cold and felt very under the weather so we cancelled to rearrange and yesterday was when we headed south! Unfortunately the weather was horrid, but never mind! We went for a wander, and unable to visit the Blake Museum because it wasn’t open, we went instead to the church. There has been a church in Bridgwater since before the Norman Conquest, but it’s not exactly certain where it was – maybe where the present church stands. The earliest record of a church on this actual site is 1107, but it has been rebuilt many times. These days churches are open to the community for a variety of activities, and when we visited, there was a little café with homemade cakes for sale! Of course we sampled them, along with coffee!
We left the church and went over to the hotel and checked in. We were led upstairs to a wonderful and elegant room, facing the church! What great views we had of the old building! Our room was beautifully decorated and very comfortable with a massive bed – enough to generously accommodate my 6’6½” husband and me. We lounged about and then descended for dinner, which was well up to standard, and then retired to the elegant bar. It’s an interesting old building, with twisty staircases and corridors going off in different directions, I confess, I did take the wrong turn a couple of times! Although it’s so very old, it’s got every modern convenience you might desire! Apparently it’s haunted, but no ghostly presence made its presence felt – I was a little disappointed.
Usually when you go away for the night, it’s further than twenty miles away – but having a micro-holiday just a twenty mile drive away was great, and I’m thinking we may very well do it again some time!

This is a nice story. I wonder if this is totally fictional or if it’s inspired by In Real Life events.
