The writing gang

I mentioned yesterday that a few of us from our writing group, Writers in Stone, met at the rather splendid Black Cat pub in Weston-super-Mare yesterday. As well as promoting our own work and our latest group anthology, ‘V‘, we were doing some publicity for the pub’s new venture, a story night. A flyer was produced, a poster made, and we had a photo taken which you can admire in my featured image.

STORY NIGHT AT THE BLACK CAT

On 6th November at 8 pm The Black Cat, Weston High Street, is hosting a story night. Local writers are invited to come and read their short stories. Any topic is acceptable, the only constraint being it shouldn’t take longer than five or ten minutes to read. If you’re not a writer, do come along and listen to some interesting, engaging, and maybe chilling tales! What could be better than a cosy pub with writers’ imaginations taking you far from the gloom of a dark November night?
For details see The Black Cat at https://www.facebook.com/BlackCatMicropub
or Writers in Stone at https://www.facebook.com/groups/392847511385212
Admission is free.

My featured image shows four of the writing gang, plus the landlord on the left: Anne Bunn, Brian Price, me, Hamish MacNeil – aka The Poet Macaque.  We all feature in ‘V‘, and I’ve mentioned Hamish many times here, however, you may not have heard of Anne and Brian, so here’s an excerpt from their author notes in our anthology:

  • Anne Bunn has been bothered and bewildered by the need to write stories from her earliest years as a proud channel islander but despite keeping a notebook by her bed for midnight inspiration, life kept intervening. the poetry bug hit much later but now the two vie for her undivided attention and no-one is safe from her attempt to encapsulate her responses in words.
  • Brian Price is a retired scientist and environmentalist who probably reads more crime fiction than is good for him. he is author of ‘Crime writing: how to write the science, a guide for crime writers’, and also a number of short stories. His first novel, ‘Fatal Trade’, was published in 2021, and his second, ‘Fatal Hate’, was published in 2021, followed by ‘Fatal Dose’ and ‘Fatal Blow’ in 2023. His fifth novel, ‘Fatal Image’ was published earlier this year.
