I don’t think I’ve written much about the Dolphin pub quiz recently – not because we haven’t continued to take part regularly, but because… well, I don’t know why!
The Dolphin is one of two pubs in the village, the other and slightly older is the Ship which is a perfectly fine, well-run and popular pub, just not “our” pub. To us, the Dolphin is like an extra room in our home – except it’s several hundred yards away. Each week on a Tuesday evening there’s the pub quiz, two rounds of twenty-five random questions, answered on a 5×5 answer sheet. The squares are also randomly numbered, the questions are read in order, answers written in the correct square. When the actual answers are read out, it becomes like playing bingo – if you get a straight line or right answers, in any direction you shout ‘Dolphin’, and the first team to do so gets a prize. The quiz continues and another prize is given to whoever has the highest score.
We always try and sit in the same place with our team, on the middle tables of the first bar, the Am-Drams (the Bleadon Players amateur dramatics group) to our right, Tim’s team to our left, and random strangers sitting at the bar. As well as my husband and sometimes my son, we are usually joined by local artist Fiona, the Poet Macaque aka Hamish MacNeil, the writer Fenja Hill, and former canal boaters Pip and Rob. However, last night we were somewhat depleted, and it was a purely family affair with our overseas player joining us from Türkiye.
It wasn’t only our team who were depleted, there were few quizzers altogether. Tim and wife were on holiday and the rest of their team were elsewhere, fewer than usual Am-Drams were present, and other teams seemed to be absent or have absentees. However, as usual we had a great time, enjoying our own company, enjoying the delicious home-made half-time pizza, and not winning.
