The end was the end

Many people ask me things about my books, and occasionally they ask if there is going to be a sequel. I always used to answer ‘no’ with a smile because for me, the end was the end. However – when I wrote my first novel about Thomas Radwinter, I felt that in fact the end was not the end. Without spoiling anything for you if you haven’t yet read ‘Radwinter‘, I can tell you that it was about Thomas’s search for his father, Raddy, who had gone missing when he was a child. Thomas’s research revealed much of Raddy’s story – however, it also revealed unanswered questions about the other side of his family. I felt obliged to write that story – for my own satisfaction, for Thomas’s – and also because there were a lot of ideas buzzing in my head. This lead onto the other books in the series – and  although I have ideas for another one, I think it may be time to leave him to his own devices.

With my other novels I have never been tempted to continue relating the lives of the characters in a sequel – however, they do continue their lives – but in my head, in my imagination! Sometimes I actually write them down, as a sort of wind-down from being so involved in their adventures. At the moment I’m following Aislin McManus and her life – if you’ve read ‘Loving Judah‘ you’ll know she’s a teacher and the story begins on the day of the funeral of her beloved stepson, Judah. However, what I’m jotting down now is six months later, after the events I’ve written about in my book. Even if I write a lot of this story, I’m pretty sure it won’t ever make a book – although I may use it as a template for something else. Another story I continued after ‘The End’, is ‘The Stalking of Rosa Czekov‘ – I’ve written quite a lot following two of the characters who ‘starred’ in that, but it’s just for my own entertainment, and to keep my hand in with writing when I seem to have an empty head and lack inspiration! In one instance, I felt so involved with a character, that after her story in ‘night vision’, she and her husband re-appear in one of my Radwinter books, ‘Saltpans‘!
