It’s been a pleasant but ordinary sort of a day today. I was with my two writing chums, Macaque and Fenja Hill, hoping to meet up with a prospective new member of our writing group. Unfortunately the prospective member didn’t make the rendezvous, but we had a very enjoyable morning chatting about various things, books, writing, reading, poetry, books, writing group, poetry… you can imagine our conversation! While we were together there was an absolute torrential downpour outside, rain on a Biblical scale, and people staggering in looked as if they’d just climbed out of the sea! Fortunately I was able to summon my chauffeur to give me a lift home, but we drove through literally inches of water lying on the roads, even as more tumbled from the skies.
Home again, it was lunch time, and then I became chauffeur to take husband to a ukulele group gig – tiny carpark meant it was better if I drove and dropped him off. Home and I plunged into serious editing of my next novel, all now seems to be well, every finger crossed that it continues. Shortly, we will have the latest series of Masterchef to watch, and then, depending on the weather we may go in search of beer.
One thing I learned about earlier, is a glass (not cup) of tea made in an unusual way – is called London Fog and it’s made using Earl Grey tea, vanilla syrup and warm milk. I have to say it does not tempt me, I really don’t like the perfumy bergamot flavour of Earl Grey tea (named after the British Prime Minister who was leader at the time of the Reform Act of 1832 and the Slavery Abolition Act of 1834) I also really don’t like very milky tea, and although I really do like vanilla the thought of it in tea does not appeal! So if anyone offered me a glass of London Fog, as interested as I am in its history, I would gracefully decline!
I’m guessing the name is given because of its cloudy appearance and a nod to the infamous London smog, of 1952, which I wrote about recently when recommending the book ‘Breath’ by Dominic Donald. I was recommended the book by my other writing friend, Brian Price who was born during it!

Earl Gray or Grey? 🙂

Oh heck, it is of course Earl Grey – both the tea and his Lordship! Thank you, as ever, for pointing out my error!
