I must have mentioned the writer Marion Todd before, she writes police procedurals set in St Andrews in Scotland with the main character of Detective Inspector Clare Mackay. Her first book in the series was published in 2020, and it was probably a couple of years later that I read it, and then caught up with the rest in the series. Since then I’ve read them again, and now am rereading them once more.
I like them because the characters are believable and consistent. The setting – the cathedral town of St Andrews in Fife in Scotland, the ‘home of golf’, is interesting and makes me want to visit – although it is a very long way from here in Somerset! The scenarios for the action and the crimes are sometimes mundane, but intriguing, and the investigation gripping. As well as the dull routine of the procedures and processes of solving the crimes and mysteries, there is page-turning action with unexpected outcomes, and the characters sometimes in peril. Part of this is the realistic and different characters, some lovable, some really annoying, some bland, some relatable but dull, some intriguing – just as real people are!
I am excited that there is a new book due out in January, “Watch Them Fall”, but here are Clare Mackay books which are available:
1 See Them Run
2 In Plain Sight
3 Lies to Tell
4 What They Knew
5 Next in Line
6 Old Bones Lie
7 A Blind Eye
8 Bridges to Burn
9 Dead Man’s Shoes
