It’s writing group tomorrow and the topic to write to is something you might find in a kitchen drawer – or was it ‘a kitchen drawer’ or was it an unexpected something found in the drawer. I’m not exactly sure, but I have to come up with a story before tomorrow. I actually have written a story about that exact thing, but I can’t for the moment find it, and even if I could I would write a new different one because it seems like cheating otherwise!
We have six drawers in our kitchen – two deep drawers, one in which we keep herbs, spices, condiments, and the other electrical kitchen equipment. Then we have a separate unit with four more shallower drawers, top for cutlery, second for utensils, third for the posh cutlery and the bottom for tinfoil, greaseproof paper and cling film – and anything else which doesn’t have its own home. So there isn’t much here for inspiration to get a story written!
I confess, this challenge reminds me of the sort of tasks we were set for homework when we were at school, and because I’ve (unusually) left teh task until the last minute, it resonates in that way too! So, what are my thoughts, what can I write which will match up to the standard that of my fellow writers? A recipe, a letter hidden in a cookery book, a knife which is used for violence not cuisine? Is it grandma’s kitchen and something is found which shows her in a different light, or reveals a secret hidden since her younger days? Has a mischievous child hidden something in the back of the drawer?
Maybe the kitchen is merely a scene where something else happens, an unexpected proposal of marriage – or a sinister undertaking such as planning a robbery or bank raid? A ferocious argument leading to injury or even death – murder, murder, murder (“Hot Fuzz” quote) A family disagreement which explodes over dinner – or as they are preparing to entertain friends or family? In one of my novels, the opening scene of the book is in the kitchen and two strangers unexpectedly engage in a very intimate encounter!
So I’ve plenty of thoughts and ideas, but none are exactly exciting me, I must do some more pondering – but not take too long over it, I’m meeting my writing friends at ten o’clock tomorrow!
