What a great evening!
We had arrived in Chorlton early evening, having spent the day in Salford with our boy. While Andrew’s lovely partner, Tina, rallied the troops at home, Andrew and I walked down tot he Horse and Jockey where the launch party of Andrew’s book ‘The Story of Chorlton-cum-Hardy’, was being launched.
The Horse and Jockey is a very old pub on Chorlton Green which has undergone many changes in its life. Now it is a clean, bright place, retaining old features such as its ceiling beams (beware if you’re tall!) a micro-brewery, great beer and wonderful selection of whiskys and an extensive and tempting menu.
Chorlton bookshop who was promoting the event was already there… not the store of course, you understand, but two very nice ladies with a couple of boxes of Andrew’s book. While Andrew ensconced himself at the signing table, and the bookshop at an adjacent table, I went round the people already in the pub giving out leaflets and telling them about the launch.
Andrew had organised a folk group to come and play along… what a wonderful bunch of musicians and singers who certainly gave the evening a party air! Tina arrived with the family and friends and it wasn’t too long before there was a queue of people wanting to have their copy of Andrew’s book signed by the author!
It was a wonderful and most successful evening, and everyone who bought the book was highly delighted – it is a great story of this tiny collection of farms and cottages which grew into the popular and bustling suburb of Manchester. Even if you have no connection with the place, you’ll find it fascinating!
