Stones or Beatles?

I was lucky to be just the right age when music changed forever! Not only was there the change in technology but also the radio stations soon had to catch up with the new music.

I don’t remember when I first heard of the Beatles, but I remember the first time I saw them; we did not have a tv and I was in a neighbour’s house watching their little black and white box when on came the Beatles, and they were so fresh and so alive and so interesting that I immediately became a convert. They had such distinct personalities too, mysterious end enigmatic John, handsome shy George, comical Ringo and Paul who I never ‘liked’ as much as the other three. We bought all their LPs as they came out, which was not easy with the tiny pocket-money we had, but I had a paper round so I had a little spare money! Each LP was better than the previous, and when ‘Sergeant Pepper’ came out in 1967 it was like no other music I’d ever heard before. It was the year my family moved from Cambridge to Weston, and my classmates bought me the LP as a leaving present… so it will always have that fond association too.

I heard about the Stones  in about 1963 on the bus going to school, so I heard about them before I heard them… and when I heard them I just didn’t like Mick Jagger’s strangulated nasal voice… when I saw them there was nothing which appealed visually either. I really didn’t like their music at all… and even now, although I’ll dance along to their classics, I still don’t like their music.

Once I was in the sixth form, my musical taste changed radically and I became very interested in the alternative scene, the Incredible String Band for example… then at uni a whole new world of music opened up to me… and I have been open to new and different music ever since!

…oh and in case you’re wondering, the featured image is of Raul Malo… nothing to do with the Stones or Beatles!
