Christmas songs

I think I must be turning into Scrooge because nothing drives from a shop more quickly than hearing Christmas songs; if I hear ‘White Christmas’, ‘Have yourself a merry little Christmas’, or ‘Blue Christmas’ one more time I shall scream and scream until I either get taken away or the music goes off! It isn’t only that the songs are repeated over and over, but some of them I think are pretty awful to begin with. I would tolerate some jolly Christmas carols or a brass band, but would prefer no music at all while I’m shopping.

So, to avoid upsetting me, here are the songs not to play (only a selection, there are far more!) They are in no particular order, they are all as bad as each other, bah, humbug!

  1. Fairytale of New York,
  2. All I Want For Christmas Is You,
  3. Santa Claus is Coming to Town
  4. Do You Hear What I Hear?
  5. Rockin Around The Christmas Tree,
  6. Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!,
  7. Stop The Calvary,
  8. White Christmas,
  9. Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire),
  10. Santa Baby,
  11. Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,
  12. Blue Christmas,
  13. I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus,

We don’t get proper carol singers any more either, we used to get a silver band come round and stand under the streetlamp and play… now we get a couple of kids who sing ‘We wish you a merry Christmas’ but just the first couple of lines.

Me too. But one of the good ones: yesterday in the supermarket the ‘Yorkshire Saxaphone Choir’ were playing, collecting for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. It was an unusual but lovely sound; I told them so and dropped something in their bucket.
