About three or so years ago, we gave our children a Wii fit set including a few games, the balance board and all the gubbins you need. Being a joining-in sort of mum I went on it too, and thought that maybe Wii-fit would be a fun way to just improve my fitness a little… the children began to get busy with important exam work, social lives, teenage activities, and every day I spent at least thirty minutes on the Wii… I just loved it!

The console is attached to the TV and a little receiver thingy placed on top of the TV, discs are put in the console which play interactive games; each person has a little character who does the various exercises and routines and games on the Wii-Fit, which as the name suggests is a fun exercise programme. Using the balance board which you step off an on, or move about on, you can go jogging, or cycling, or hula-hoop, all sorts of different activities.
There is an option to be weighed each day which is against the device of most diet regimes, but I opted to do it because it was a helpful little aid to self-control and not over-eating. This didn’t mean that I didn’t go out for meals or enjoy myself, it just made me more aware of what I was eating and drinking.
I was amazed at how, slowly and surely, along with watching what I was eating and drinking, I began to lose weight, and began to get fitter; I could run up and down stairs with little trouble, and several flights of stairs at the college where I then worked. I noticed my posture and deportment were better (my great-grandma Lois would be proud!)
I went on the Wii every day for at least thirty minutes – not necessarily all at once; I might do five minutes while waiting for the family to get ready to go out, or while the tea was brewing. I might watch tv and do some stepping… and if I missed a day I didn’t fret, I wasn’t addicted to it! When we went away or on holiday and I checked my weight and fitness when we got home it was helpful to see where I was up to and what my targets should be.
I took it slowly, and over eighteen months I lost more than two stone (twenty-eight pounds or more) Then it platformed and I made no more progress, although I maintained my weight which I was pleased at. This year has been really busy; one child at Uni, one child taking important exams then going to Uni, trips to Iceland and Ireland, family events, and writing, writing, writing, so gradually I stopped using the Wii.

I’ve decided that all the sitting I’m doing now has to be counter-acted, and now Christmas is over and we had a lovely, lovely indulgent time, I have taken up my friend the Wii again. I was tentative about weighing myself after nearly a year off, and I have put on eight pounds! I’m amazed it isn’t more, delighted it isn’t more, and I am back doing my thirty minutes a day, and enjoying it! I’m never going to be skinny and super-fit, but I would like to be nearer the right weight for my height, and to improve my stamina… look out hills (little ones) here I come!

I’ve thought about getting one but didn’t know which ‘game’ to get with it..

I really recommend the Wii fit – it is great fun and I got a little competitive with myself, trying to beat my own scores. There is also a multi-player on this program, so you can have fun with someone else. last night my daughter and I were on racing cows – I was hopeless! It helps balance, inner muscles, especially tummy muscles – and yet you don’t realise it because you’re trying to get your cow to jump the fence and knock down the scarecrows!
