Only the wealthy could live round the marina in Portishead. It is lovely, and in the sunshine the clean, bright new buildings look splendid; the sun sparkles off the water and the yachts and boats shimmer serenely on the surface, and the swans swim even more serenely among them.
Portished itself is a nice little Somerset town on the Severn Estuary. People have lived here as long as people have been on the islands, but Portishead was certainly in use as a more ‘modern’ port in Roman times. There were modern docks her too, and power stations, it was a thriving and bustling place until the industry died. Now revamped it has become glamorous, and certainly some of the boats we saw must have been worth a bob or two!
We had a lovely afternoon, strolling about, looking at the boats, the buildings, the sea. Would I want to live her? No thanks, too tamed, too precise, and in an odd way reminded me of ‘The Prisoner’!
