This is a report in a newspaper from 1936:
At Lewes Police Court on Tuesday the following were fined for obstructing the public highway with motor cars: –
Mrs Selina Olivia Manning of Paradise Walk, Chelsea, London in High Street Newhaven, on September 29th. P.C. Butcher stated that defendant left her car on a pedestrian crossing for an hour and twenty minutes, and this caused considerable obstruction. Defendant wrote a letter to the Court regretting the trouble she had caused to the police.
Defendant fined £1.
Mrs Helen de Pass, of Church Farm, Ripe, in Cliffe High Street Lewes, on September 16th. P.C. Angel stated that when he told defendant about her car causing an obstruction she said it was ridiculous, as she had her shopping to do. She added that she could not be bothered with car parks when she was shopping…
Tantalisingly I don’t have the rest of the cutting and don’t know what the court’s response was, nor how she was fined! I also thought it quite amusing that the policeman was P.C. Angel – was this Nick Angel before he was promoted (Hot Fuzz)
