Holiday baking (forget calory counting!)

I can hardly wait for Friday! It will be the start of the family holiday and this year we’re in Devon. We tend to go to different places each year, although a couple of times we’ve repeated a location. The place might be different but there are certain things on our family holiday which are always the same.

  • we always have sausage and mash the first night we are there (Powters sausages)
  • we always have chipolata sausages for the first few breakfasts until they are all eaten (Powters)
  • We always have Pimms o’clock before dinner (or gin for those who prefer)
  • We always have a Sunday roast cooked by Ruth
  • We always have an Easter egg hunt
  • We always have a tin of sausage rolls made by Carolyn’s sister Debbie (Powters)
  • We always have ham and jackets on the last night
  • We always eat and drink too much

Each family cooks one evening meal during the week, apart from the first and last night when we just have an easy  dinner and we don’t have a dessert, but what we do have is cake!! Everyone makes and brings at least one cake, and although there is a vague plan, no-one is ever quite sure what will be hiding in the cake-tins. I’m making a carrot cake, and probably some Easter biscuits. I know Robin will make his famous Battenburg, and probably a lemon drizzle. Diana usually makes a date and walnut, Carolyn often makes brownies, Ruth makes chocolate crispies and flapjack… but there is always a little something else which someone brings…. The diet starts on April 6th!!
