Everything in the garden is coming up… and the roses!

What a difference from last year! A lot of rain to really soak the soil deep down in the early part of the year (too much we thought at the time) a long cool spring with lots of light which got the plants growing but not flowering, fewer slugs, maybe killed off by the cold nights, and now at last, some glorious, really glorious sunshine!

really, sun is the key; our soil has been so cold, there is a lot of clay in it, and last year with all the rain and little lengthy periods of good weather at the right time, it never warmed up enough to give the things we planted much confidence to grow and flourish…. June is different this year! We’ve had some lovely days, lunch-in-the-garden days, wandering-around-doing-garden-chores days.

You wouldn't know but this is a gooseberry... lots of leaves, no fruit
You wouldn’t know but this is a gooseberry… lots of leaves, no fruit

We have cabbage coming up, and carrots, and potatoes, and beans and peas as well as the gooseberry which I hope will give us some fruit this year! Once again the raspberries are going mad, looking strong and healthy with loads of flowers, the herbs are rampant,I know doing the garden gives us exercise, but really we want some edible rewards too!
