Shahnaz, a great place for a curry!

On Sunday we went to the Shahnaz in Cheddar for a curry… and what a treat as always! It is a lovely restaurant at the bottom of the Gorge, situated on the corner so there are windows on two sides. Downstairs is a bar a waiting area for people who are collecting take-aways, but up an elegant sweeping staircase is a large dining area with stunning views up the gorge and over the village. As usual we were greeted by friendly and pleasant people and shown to a nice table by the window. Then came the tricky part, deciding what to eat! The menu is so full of tempting delights it’s really difficult to make up your mind. I quickly solved the dilemma by choosing a thali; this is a circular tray with maybe eight or ten little dishes, each with a different delectable curry; in my thali I had a channa dhal ( split peas) a chickeny thing in a creamy sauce, a lamby thing in a hot sauce, seasoned lamb chops, a vegetable curry, a dish of yoghurt and cucumber, a roti (Indian bread) some rice… and another thing I’ve forgotten.

I was so busy eating my meal that I didn’t notice what my fellow diners ate but we were all quite quiet and at the end the dishes were empty! We drank Bangla beer, made in Bangladesh; I really like it but apparently it’s only available in restaurants… what a shame.

That looks delicious! Because Australia is closer to East and South-East Asia we are blessed with some great Thai and Vietnamese and Japanese and Chinese restaurants. But with a comparatively smaller population whose heritage is from the sub-continent, we don’t have nearly so many good curry shops as England does. Envy, envy.

Most “Indian” restaurants over here are now Bangladeshi – it used to be mainly Pakistani people who ran them and cooked, but as they moved into other areas of employment the newer arrivals took over. Now in big cities like Bristol there are restaurants from different areas of India, my favourite is now from the south, from the area of Kerela… the flavours are just wonderful, and vegetables I’ve never seen or heard of before… if you come over again we’ll definitely have to go! I might have to do a lot of research before then… just work my way through the menus to find what I like best…
