… and suddenly we found it!

Wandering round Bristol, our nearest big city, we often come across something new because, to be honest, we actually don’t know Bristol very well. We were just aimlessly meandering and came across this interesting building.

This ancient building was almshouses for Bristol’s deserving poor, built by John Foster who as Mayor of Bristol. He made his money through salt and was mayor in 1481,when he endowed this rather lovely building. Amazingly, it is still home to elderly people, nearly 540 years later!

As you can no doubt tell, this actual building doesn’t date from that time, although parts of it do; it has been rebuilt several times over the years , and the plaque below gives details of one of the later benefactors, Dr George Owen. There is a chapel adjoining it, which is original; it has a most interesting dedication to the Three Kings of Cologne. This is unique in Britain and probably refers to refer to Cologne Cathedral, where there is a dedication to the Magi, the Three Wise men from the story of the nativity..104_2012
