There are many reasons to go to the Lowery in Salford; you can see an exhibition of L.S.Lowry’s paintings, and probably other art exhibitions too, and a theatre and cinema… It was built in 1988 on the site of Pier 8; set in docklands, or former docklands in the city of Salford, it has a shape reminiscent of a ship, which is quite fitting for the area. There are design features within te building which add to the feeling of a maritime connection.
To quote for the website:
The Lowry comprises a sequence of geometrical shapes – hexagon, circle, triangle and rectangle. The promenade runs all the way round building is intended to give leisurely access to all parts of the building. The spaces are designed in layers like an onion and decorated with the bright colours that are typical of Michael Wilford’s architecture. First is the cool glass and stainless steel skin around the outside to reflect the sky and water; then comes the blue terrazzo floor of the foyer, with silver lines that are reminiscent of the longitude and latitude lines on a nautical map.
You can also have a cup of coffee in the bar area with a slopey floor… it gives a strange perspective of the world outside.
