Such a lot of laughs

Tonight the book club met at Andrea’s house; we were discussing ‘The Lifeboat’ by Charlotte Rogan; now I have a problem with my book club… well both my book clubs to be honest… that quite often it is me among us who really doesn’t like the book which has been chosen… or recommends a book that no-one else likes. On this occasion I thought I was safe; we had looked at ‘The Lifeboat’ with my Sunday book club, and not only had I read the whole thing without flinging it across the room, bit I had really enjoyed it, and so had the other members of the group. We’d had a great discussion, and so i recommended it to my Wednesday book club and we met this evening to discuss it.

Without spoiling anything or giving away any clues I can say that the book is about a group of people in a lifeboat after  ship-wreck in the Atlantic; it is before the 1st World War so there is no suggestion of enemy action and it just an intriguing study of how forty odd people coped with the ghastly situation of being cast adrift in a small lifeboat after their ship sank.

We sat round in Andrea;s comfortable home, glasses of wine and tasty snacks and as with my other group, we had all enjoyed the book and sent an intensive hour discussing it. It was interesting to hear different points of view from the different group and the different ways people had interpreted it.

We moved onto catching up with our news, and Judith told us the horrific story of how she’d had a virtual house invasion with a vacuum cleaner salesman… who had stayed for FOUR hours trying to pressure her into buying the cleaner… a lot of sympathy, and then… and then..,. such a lot of laughs as we moved onto all the ridiculous things which had happened to us in the time since we last saw each other, including my disastrous self haircut with a pair of craft scissors, … and do you know, now I can’t even remember what we were laughing at, only that we were almost crying with laughing…

I always enjoy my book club!

I know, usually I’m like that too! In our books we all decide what we’re going to read so it’s more consensual… but even so, sometimes I go along with the others and end up either disappointed or with a book-hurling moment! I find it’s the same with films and music – if anyone recommends it… kiss of death!
