I give up. What does crumbs mean? Is that an expletive?

It means ‘gosh!’, ‘heck!’ – I think it’s quite old-fashioned, probably only me says it!

I was just thinking about what Thomas Edison said about invention. Its 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration. That must apply to writing novels I guess.

The 10% arrives all at once – lovely, wonderful, marvellous… but oh no! Here comes the 90% perspiration galloping along after it!
