Hello 6a.m.!

When I was at work, and all my working life I got up early. The earliest was when I worked at Manchester Airport and did shifts, which I loved. But even when I had a conventional 9 o’clock start, I was always up early and in work early.

I liked to be in work early and getting organised, getting coffee, catching up with the news and just chilling before I got own to it. I imagined that when I was free from work the habit would continue and I would leap from my bed ready to get going on whatever I had planned… usually writing! However… however, this didn’t happen. I found it more and more difficult to even wake up, let alone get up! As well as being an early bird all my working life, I have also always been an owl, staying up into the first hours of the morning… maybe all that lack of sleep is catching up on me.

This morning I had a doctor’s appointment at 7 o’clock (yes, seven… in the morning, 7 a.m.) I did manage to get up on time, and get to the doctor’s in time to sit in the waiting room chatting to a woman who also writes, and then saw the doctor and was home by 7:20… so I can still do it, and yes, 6 a.m. does still exist!

I have been retired since 2012 and I still set my alarm for 6am 🙂 – I am a true morning person and love my early morning walks.

I think sleeping in is another way of saying avoiding getting up. We still have the same biological clock so something else has changed. Isn’t it only babies that get there days and nights mixed up? Terms like ennui, denial and escapism come to mind. Maybe not. Just a thought.

I think my husband falls into that category, he just really likes being cosy in bed, preferably reading with a cup of tea. I actually want to wake up and get up… but maybe my sub-conscious is telling me something different! I’m just surprised the time of waking is not so ingrained in me after so many years of working!

No, not 6am, I am still a night person, I like to work in the silence after everyone has left, when the sound travels and the light is dim. Never did get on with early starts.
