Tasty, very tasty

If you like big juicy prawns, and if you like them in a sweet, vibrant, tasty, zingy sauce, full of lovely vegetables and chunky mushrooms, with a touch of spice to bring out the flavour and a sprinkle of cheese on the top, then you might very well want to look at a recipe I came across the other day.

One of my favourite foods is Turkish food, and one of my – no, my absolute favourite cook is Ozlem Warren whose website is a constant source (and sauce!) of inspiration and whose recipes always work without fail. I came across her recipe for karides guvec, which is a one-pot meal of prawns and sweet vegetables. I set my chef to work and he produced a stunning dinner… we substituted red for green pepper as that was what we had, and as we had no nice Turkish bread we had whole grain toast. It was simply yum! I ate the leftovers cold with salad the next day, and I thought the flavours had really melded and matured overnight.

Not a brilliant photo… but you get the idea!

Just drooled all over my keyboard. Jeez your lucky. By the way what’s the difference between a shrimp and a prawn? Haven”t heard the word prawn used since I left England.

I think what we call prawns you call shrimp… they are big fat yummy things. Shrimps to us are little ones about an inch long but with the finest flavour – better flavour than prawns really, but they are very small… did you ever go to Morecambe when you were in Manchester – Morecambe Bay shrimps are among the finest!

Never went to Morecambe when I lived there or on a visit. Had steamed shrimp at Blackpool at the beach in a brown bag and had to pull the heads off to eat them. Later went to a bar and got a free shrimp cocktail to go with the beer thus felt obliged to eat it. All shrimped out by then. Got in the wrong side of the car to drive back to my Aunts in Manchester and couldn’t find the steering wheel. Police found me a room for the night, good guys. Our big shrimp are Tiger shrimps. Too many and I get the gout though. Ouch!

Gout… poor you, my husband suffers from time to time with that, although he can’t relate it to any one thing.
Tiger shrimp… they sound very good, are they striped?

They are striped, ergo the name.Sometimes we grill them on the barbie then the next day I eat dark cherries and cranberry juice to ward off the gout. Why is it you have to suffer to enjoy what you most like. Something like beer and women. Gotta be a moral somewhere!

Has to be the dark cherries, fresh not canned. Don’t know if you have cranberry juice there though. They grow in bogs here and he should avoid orange juice and have cranberry juice instead. Both cherries and cranberries flush out the kidneys and get rid of the uric acid that causes gout. I don’t share this info with just anyone so no fee this time.

Sorry for being so long- winded but forgot to tell you yesterday that red meat and red wine, especially wine are the likely causes of your husbands gout. Haven’t had wine for 20 years, Haven’t had gout for 20 years. Go figure!

Is it something that affects more men than women? I drink far more red wine than he does – he really only has a pint or two in the Dolphin, and the occasional whisky. Thanks for the mention about red meat… I’ll look at our diet and see if it is a little unbalanced that way!

My wife says that women get the gout also. My theory on that is that they can handle pain better and they don’t complain as much as us guys. I drink low carbohydrate beer 4% alcohol and only 2.5 carbs per bottle but don’t know if there is such a thing in England. Very popular here with diabetics and dieters. Taste grows on you but better than abstinence.
