Tidying

Why is it so much easier to tidy up other people’s places than your own… or at least it is for me. I always have the feeling at home that when I tidy up, there is an invisible being following me around, untidying behind me, moving things about, and putting things away in the wrong places.

It’s that time of year when parents all across the country, and no doubt all across the world, are collecting their children from colleges and universities and bringing not just them home but the mountain of belongings they have acquired while they have been away. We recently returned with child number 2 who has been at university in Northern Ireland; I flew over, helped her pack her little car, and then we drove and ferry-ed home with all her things. We unloaded the car and put it all in her bedroom… which left hardly any space for her! So today, while she was on a job interview I went into her room and tidies it. It just seemed so easy; I worked quickly and efficiently, sorting, putting away, organizing the bits and bobs into different boxes and bags, and after a couple of hours everything was fairly sorted… I went into my bedroom… utter chaos… and I know if I try to tackle it, it will seem like a monumental task!

Soon we will be heading north to pick up number 1 child’s stuff…

I’m not a plumber but I like to meddle with it. When asked to help someone with a plumbing problem I love to get involved. So far my luck helping others has been great and I’ve had a lot of fun and satisfaction but when it comes to my own house the same doesn’t hold true. It usually borders on disaster. Go figure!
