We visited Poperinge in Belgium recently but unfortunately we were on a rather whistle-stop tour of the area and we only had time for lunch and a quick wander but it is definitely a town I would like to return to. It was one of those places which just had a really nice atmosphere, and we really felt comfortable there. By the way, I had fish soup for lunch, which may seem strange but the waitress came to take our order very promptly and I just blurted it out… but it really was very delicious so I was glad I chose it.
Poperinge was a town many British soldiers were able to visit during the first World War when things went quiet; how they must have enjoyed the beer for which the area is famous, maybe thinking back to the English beers at home. Poperinge is famous for hops, and in fact 80% of Belgium’s hops are grown round here and there is a hops museum! In September there is a hops festival, if you are tempted to visit, have a look here:

As with most places in the area, there are also sad and tragic associations, as it was here that many British service-men were executed by firing squad, some for desertion, others for different offences. However, the town is also home of Talbot House, started as a serviceman’s club open to all regardless of rank. Toc H, the charity which started in Talbot House is still serving others today:
I’m sure we will go back to Poperinge, I would like to stay there for a few days and really get to see around it, visit Talbot House, and the beautiful church, and obviously sample the beer!
