Does size matter?

it was my English conversation class this morning; we were rather thin on numbers and the TV screen didn’t work where we would have shown a presentation about English village fêtes… well, school fêtes, church fêtes, summer fêtes… Because we were so few, four teachers and three students, we gathered round the computer… and somehow or other we got to be talking about different countries, so I quickly called up a map of the world to look at the countries we were interested in, China, Lithuania and Thailand, where the students came from, and also Australia and Russia for some reason as well.

I came across a very interesting site which compared the size of countries; it’s called MapFight and you put in the two countries you want to compare, and it shows their outlines, one in red, one in blue, overlapping so you can see how they compare. Natalia who comes from Lithuania said her country was small, and compared to the UK it is; the UK is 3.72 times bigger! Thailand however, where Vilavan’s family live,  is 2.11 times bigger than the UK. As for mighty China, it is 39.51 times bigger than the UK, 18.7 times bigger than Thailand, and 146.97 times bigger than Lithuania! Good heavens!

We then wondered how China compared to Russia and Australia; Russia is 1.78 times bigger than China and 2.22 times bigger than Australia. It is fascinating, and if you want to compare countries you have an interest in, here is the link:
