The Blitz Tea Room

As you can imagine in a seaside town like ours, businesses are always opening and then sadly closing, and re-opening as a new enterprise… and then sadly… yes, you’ve got it. People start with such high hopes and such imagination, trying to work for themselves in these days when there is too much unemployment, and cut-backs in every area. Sometimes you get the feeling that some of these new ventures are doomed… the wrong sort of business maybe, in the wrong area, or too near other similar establishments… sometimes you wonder if much planning went into it at all.. and sometimes you’re really sad because it was a lovely dress shop/ knickknacks shop/ café/ bar/ restaurant etc..

So everyone was quite excited when a new tea room opened on the Boulevard, excited because it seemed different enough, had style, was original, and was well thought out and planned. It’s the sort of place which will appeal to towns folk and visitors, and considering Weston has such a large population in their third age, then it is absolutely up their street.

It is called the Blitz Tea Room, and not only has lots of interesting memorabilia from the war years, but the waitresses are dressed as 1940’s girls, even the crockery and cutlery is reminiscent of those days – not that I can remember them, far too young! The teapots have cosies, the menu has SPAM, the cakes are wonderful (no dried egg!) and the tea is leaf tea – oh and I forgot to use the strainer!

Sample menu:

Starters: Corned beef fritter served with a salad garnish,
or potato & cheese fritter, served with a salad garnish.

Main: Toad in the hole served with mashed potatoes baked beans or peas

or Fish & tomato bake served with mashed potato & peas

Dessert: Summer fruit crumble served with cream
or trifle
