it was pouring down with rain today, and the great black lowering clouds promised more. The gutters were full of water and there were puddles everywhere. I must admit I didn’t put a coat on but dashed backwards and forwards to the car with all the bags and boxes I needed for English conversation today.
As I drove along, at about twenty past eight, it was obviously time for the local secondary school children to be heading fr school, so along they walked in groups of three and four, or on their own or with a friend. Some were on bikes and were cycling merrily along… but not a single young person I saw was wearing a raincoat or carrying an umbrella or wearing a hat. many of them were just wearing their school blazer which obviously isn’t waterproof, some seemed just to be wearing sweatshirts or jumpers.
Now I know I often dash out without a raincoat when its raining, to get something from outside or to take the rubbish out, or even to run round to the shop… but if it’s raining like it is today and I have to walk a mile or so to somewhere, then yes, I would put a coat on, and I guess many people my age would also put a hat on a take an umbrella (I have a bit of an aversion to hats, and can never get on with an umbrella) but none, not one of the school kids I saw had anything on or over their heads, or protecting their clothes from the pouring rain.

No, not passe. Sadly, in most secondary school there is nowhere safe to leave coats and umbrellas. Lockers, if the children have them, are often located a long way from their classrooms and most schools don’t allow children to carry coats around with them all day. A far cry from the days (not that long ago) when I hung my coat in the cloakroom in the morning and it was still safely there at night.

True – and also lockers are never very secure either. We also had indoor and outdoor shoes and would leave them beneath our peg in the cloakrooms, the cloaks, from the moment we arrived until we went home!
However, I also see young people out and about at weekends, and they don’t wear coats either! 😀

Blame it on the parents. They don’t care or are intimidated by there kids refusals to wear them. My wife always buys coats or jackets with hoods attached. Saves the need for a hat and looks cool.

I think a lot of parents go to work before the children leave home!
