Some time ago I wrote about Tunnock’s teacakes; I remember them from my childhood and still enjoy them now, but the story I wrote was entitled ‘The soft and squidgy side to war’:

Although I loved the teacakes, I loved the caramel wafers more! The company has now started producing a dark chocolate version, which really appeals to my husband… maybe they have produced them for some time but we’ve only just discovered them.
Tunnock’s don’t just go back to my childhood, they go way back to 1890 when Thomas Tunnock bought a bakery in his home village of Uddingston… for £80! Uddingston is a small village to the south-east of Glasgow and the factory is still there, no doubt giving a lot of employment to the local people. Within twenty years of buying the bakery, there was a tearoom selling Tunnocks lovely breads and cakes!
After the first war, his son Archie took over the business, and after the second war, along with his two sons, Archie developed the first caramel wafer! Oh happy day! In the sixties the bakery was a distant memory, and the factory which now made all the lovely products was able to expand. Always innovative and willing to change everything except the delicious products, the first robotic teacake maker was installed in 2006.
Caramel wafers, snowballs and above all teacakes are a national treasure, with an international following… Who can forget the dancing Tunnock’s teacakes at the opening ceremony of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, 2014?!!

Fond memories of a time long past. I used to dunk mine in my tea and lick the chocolate off. Yum!

I used to nibble the chocolate off and was left with a biscuit and a lot of licked mallow!

Maybe mine were stale and thats why I dunked them. We were too poor to buy fresh ones or to have middle names. Better off now though but maybe not as happy.

Can you buy Tunnocks where you are? I know they sell them everywhere here now… but maybe your tastes have changed and they’d be too sweet and sickly!

Can’t remember who made them and haven’t seen them for a while. Ours were a little different in that they had jam in the middle on top of the wafer. My tastes have changed to anything with peanut butter e.g. cookies, chocolate or just plain. I think it’a addictive as I even dream about it. Weird or what!
