This small tree, or maybe a large bush,, was growing in a pretty square in Bristol; I took this picture the other day and you can tell by the dull light it’s winter. The tree was covered with leaves, small oval leaves, a pretty pale grey-green, reminding me a little of eucalyptus in colour, but the wrong shape… is eucalyptus an ever-green tree? I couldn’t properly see the bark, maybe I should have looked more closely but I think it was smooth, and pale too.
What caught my eye however, were the long pale yellow things hanging down like plaits or dreadlocks. Flowers? Seed pods? I’m not sure. They were so attractive in the weak January sun… but i have no idea at all what the tree is!

Perhaps it’s a species of Garrya (silk tassel)? We have native species here in California, but they are also plants are ornamentals.
