Mrs Beeton’s 1912 edition had colour and black and white plates; this selection of fruit is rather charming, but I can’t find out who the illustrator was. I hadn’t heard of black diamond plums, but apparently they are firm with a creamy coloured flesh and they are very sweet. Black diamond is now a trade-marked plum, or at least it is in the USA. It’s a little difficult to see which melon it is, I guess it’s something like a Galia.
