Going to the dump

We had some things to recycle, rubbish that the dustbin men, or refuse collectors as I believe they’re now called, can’t take away in any of the bin lorries which come round to us. We have the normal rubbish collectors who come round in their lorry for everything which cannot be recycled in any way. Then we have another bin lorry for recyclables, which includes bottles and glass, paper, tins and plastics, etc. We also have food waste collected each week – we don’t have that much as we are careful and compost things like peelings.

However… there are some things our wonderful bin men cannot take, including used cooking oil. Every so often we gather all the rubbish left behind and we take it to the rubbish dump… actually it is no longer a dump, but a recycling centre. I hadn’t been for a while and was amazed when we went today because it has all been modernised… my children despair that I get so excited over recycling rubbish, but having been brought up not to waste anything I guess it’s just the way I am.

We were met at the gate by a handsome young grey-haired man in bright orange protective overalls, who directed incomers if they needed help, and he pointed out where the used cooking oil should go. We parked up and got rid of the oil, got rid of the broken kitchen gadgets, got rid of the old cushions from the garden furnitures, and a load of odd bits of wood,  all into different containers. There were various workers busying around helping people, sweeping up, keeping it all tidy, and there must have been over twenty cars (it’s a quiet day!) with ordinary people like us who had taken the trouble to bring their rubbish to dispose of it properly.

When there is so much rubbish lying around everywhere, it’s good to know that some people are doing their best to keep things tidy!

There are hippy type tree huggers here in Canada that drive diesel powered vans that they run on used cooking oil that they get from restaraunts for free. You can smell them coming for miles. One mans’ trash is another mans’ treasure I guess.

When I was teaching we took the kids on a tour of the sewerage works; it was really interesting and not as smelly as you might imagine, but the thing that really disgusted me was all the fat from what people put down their drains… and I’ve never done it since if I can help it!! I’ve heard about cooking oil engines… I don’t think we have them over here…
