Painting with light

Hancock’s Half Hour was a popular and in many ways ground-breaking BBC radio comedy which ran from 1956 and starred Tony Hancock as an alternative version of himself. It was very funny, has stood the test of time and centred around the everyday and very mundane experiences of ‘Tony Hancock’. It had a cast of regular characters played by Sid James, Kenneth Williams, Hattie Jacques and Bill Kerr among others.

In one episode, Hancock had a meeting with a professional photographer, played by Kenneth Williams, I forget exactly why. Hancock asked for a few ‘snaps’.

Snaps? Snaps? I paint with light!” was the outraged reply.

Ever since then whenever we have been out with our cameras and have spotted a particularly fine subject, particularly where light really does play a part in composition, we have a little chuckle over ‘painting with light’!
