I’ve tried on several times to bake cakes which include vegetables – carrot cake is my favourite but I have to admit I’m not that good at making it. I once tried a beetroot cake and even though I am the one who hates waste I actually threw it away because, quite frankly, it was disgusting!
Red Nose Day is a national charity event to raise money for people in need in the UK and across the world, and one of the programmes trying to raise awareness is The Great British Bake-Off, a celebrity version. Last night the celebs had to make a cake using vegetables; there was a beetroot cake, a courgette cake and two carrot cakes. I was intrigued by the beetroot recipe because the baker just put it into a blender with butter and sugar and whizzed it all up into a mush… I would have blended it first and then stirred it in – but who I am I to say, the failed veg-cake maker! However… it did inspire me to have another go, but to not necessarily follow the recipe exactly, just use my experience and sense of what might work…
Beetroot cake… I’ll give it a go!

I tried it once as well and it was disgusting but it worked out well on GBBO. I also tried courgette cake – foul!
