Green tomato mincemeat

Last summer, having masses of unripe green tomatoes I decided to have a go at cooking them as they were and came across an intriguing recipe for green tomato mincemeat. I read it through carefully and read various reviews, and everyone seemed to think it was jolly fine and an excellent way of using up green tomatoes.

I followed the recipe perfectly in every way, lots of lovely dried fruit, rum, butter, spices, Demerara sugar etc… potted it all up, labelled it and put it away for Christmas, pit it away to mature.

I confess, I forgot it, and at Christmas used some other home-made mincemeat I had the convention all sort. It was very nice, made lovely and delicious mince-pies. recently I came across the green tomato mincemeat. Well, it might be past Christmas but we could still have some mince pies. I opened the lid… I have to say the smell was not that enticing. I tried a spoonful… oh yuk!! Yuk, yuk, yuk! it was horrible! It had a really nasty taste which even the lovely fruit, sugar, spices and rum could not disguise! I know I am very mean and don’t like waste, but in this case there was only one thing to do… I threw it all away!
