We are very excited because today there will be, from here in Uphill, a partial eclipse of the sun. My first interest in eclipses came from reading Rider Haggard ‘King Solomon’s Mines’, where thanks to astronomical prediction the heroes of the story saved the life of another character.
There was a nearly total eclipse here some time ago, and all the villagers climbed the hill armed with safe eclipse specs to observe the amazing thing… a group from the pub dressed up as Dolphin Druids… oh I wish I had a photo! They were all wearing sheets and as soon as they’d paid homage to the marvel they repaired to the pub!
