Many, many, years ago I went on a wonderful holiday with my aunty, uncle and cousin. They were living in Germany at the time, and we drove up through Denmark, took a ferry to Sweden and then drove round Norway before returning home via Sweden and Denmark again. Now there is a bridge between Denmark and Sweden, the Øresund Bridge. It actually is a road and rail bridge and is five miles long and then there is also an underwater tunnel to complete the crossing.
I though about our happy holiday from long ago when I started watching a Danish/Swedish TV drama series called ‘The Bridge’, ‘Broen’ in Danish and ‘Bron’ in Swedish. The series was first screened in 2011, and in 2012 in the UK but I missed it when it was broadcast. However I now have the box set and it’s my little treat at the end of the evening to watch an episode.
The story is gripping, but quite complicated with lots of little seemingly disconnected story lines which I am sure will all mesh together. The story starts on the Øresund Bridge, exactly on the border between Denmark and Sweden with the body of a female politician there, across the line separating the jurisdiction of the two countries. She has been murdered but shock, horror! When they move the body they find that there are two victims, the top half of the body is the politician, the bottom half is a prostitute who disappeared several years ago.
There are many characters, but the action revolves round two police officers, one from either country; a Swedish homicide detective, Saga Norén played by Sofia Helin, and her Danish opposite number Martin Rohde, played by Kim Bodnia; as you can imagine they are very different characters with very different backgrounds and lives.
Even though I have to follow it through subtitles, I am really enjoying it, it really is, as I mentioned, utterly gripping!

I went over the bridge last month. It was an experience – wasn’t as long as I thought it was going to be, though.

I would love to go over it – actually I’d love to go back to Denmark and Sweden, I was only sixteen when I was there and that’s a long time ago!!

I don’t understand how two bodies were joined together or did I miss something?

They were placed so they appeared to be one clothed body, it was only when the paramedics went to lift the body onto a stretcher they found there were two! Gory stuff!

I watched and loved both season one and two of The Bridge, it was the best thing I had seen on tv in a long while. Saga is one of the most unique and interesting characters to appear in a crime show! Looking forward to the third series airing some time this year.

Sagas is also utterly believable, the acting is superb, and the creation of the character and the writing is first class!!
