Everyone knows the Baltic is the northern European sea with countries such as Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and some Scandinavian countries, and that some of those countries are known as ‘Baltic countries’. However the word Baltic has also come into modern slang to mean really, really cold, as in ‘absolutely Baltic’. It can also mean cool as in being cool. It can refer to a particular beer brewing process…
While we were in Lewes in Sussex we fancied a cup of coffee, as we often do when we’;re out and came across a fabulous café, called Baltica. as soon as we went in the person behind the counter smiled at us, even though she was serving someone else. It was nicely crowded, but we found seats near the window so we could watch the world go by. When our coffee arrived it was in lovely cups, beautiful cups, and I recognized the design as one of those we had at the accommodation where we were staying. I had looked at its bottom and it came from Poland, and someone must have bought it in this shop.
We finished our coffee and then we realised there was another part we hadn’t noticed when we came in – too eager for a drink! On display was a wonderful selection of crockery… I gave in to temptation and bought a new teapot, a mug and a milk jug. We were really pleased with our purchases… so if you are in Lewes and want a nice cup of coffee and a teapot, go to Baltica!
