As someone who struggles with weight, I was interested to read the following suggestions to guide eating… they mostly seem very sensible to me. It was in a column by Lucy Fry:
- chew food really well – I don’t think I do – munch munch swallow is usually me, but it makes so much sense; it slows down the eating process because it takes longer and the food you are munching is better broken down
- try old grains – the article suggests grains other than wheat, and mentions amaranth, barley, buckwheat, bulgar, kamut, millet, spelt, teff, and quinoa…
- choose grass-fed or organic butter – we eat only butter anyway!
- eat mindfully… this ought to be at the top of the list!
- add organic powders to smoothies for extra nutrients – sorry, no, just no, smoothies are horrid – why not jut eat the fruit and vegetables, and “health powders” are just a fad which costs money
- soak your oats – saves money on fuel to do so, and don’t most people who don’t use ‘instant’ oats do so anyway?
- water – surely, everyone agrees with this? I’m sure people in care homes and old folks places would be much better if they were given water to drink regularly
- heavy bread or bake your own… the article suggests sour dough – as I have mentioned before I have not had a whole load of success with it, but I will try again!
- vary your veg – I would have thought this was obvious!… oh, and delicious!
- use cauliflower more… the article suggests instead of rice or pasta or couscous, and gives a recipe for a cauli pizza base… not sure I will bother with that one, thank you, much as I love cauliflower!

Use smaller plates because it looks like you have a bigger serving. Also have grits with your meal as they fill you up and have few carbs and calories.

I’m sure eating and chewing food is better to – appreciating the texture and feel of it, it must be better for digestion, I think!

Really?! Sourdough? I bake mine (finally perfected it after a year and a half) and I had no idea it would be considered healthy. I thought it was a dirty secret I hid in my freezer until it’s time for toast.

I just use King Arthur’s recipe from their website! Try googling “king Arthur’s rustic sourdough bread.” As far as starter is concerned, I can’t remember where I found the recipe/method for it, but they’re all pretty similar on the web!
