A moving story

I wonder what is wrong with our road? We moved here in 2002, into a house belonging to a lovely old couple who were downsizing to a nice flat on the hillside with views across the town and across the sea. On one side of us was an elderly lady, and beyond her an elderly couple; on the other side of us, across a little ginnel (alleyway) leading to the main road in the village, was a middle-aged couple.

It wasn’t very long before sadly, the old lady died and a young couple moved in. Within ten years they had two children and moved to a quieter village, nearer a ‘better’ school. A single lady moved in with first two then three very barky dogs, and more recently three chickens. Since sh has been here she has put the house up for sale three times – in two years.

The elderly couple were well into their nineties when sadly the old chap died and after a year or so his widow moved into an old folks home where she is still enjoying life and quite sprightly. The middle-aged couple on the other side of the ginnel also moved and another couple moved in… and now after just a few years, their house is for sale too!

Looking down the road I can count eight other houses which have been up for sale, and round the corner another five – and of those some have been up for sale, had new owners, and been up for sale again! Is this typical? Is every street like this?

When I was young we lived in a two-bedroom flat until I was fourteen, then we bought our own house and moved. Within two years my dad’s job moved and we moved with it across the country from east to west. When I was eighteen I went to Manchester to do my degree; every year of the three years I moved to a different flat. After that I moved very many times, for various reasons, so to be settled here since 2002 is almost a record!
