Twenty-one years ago…

Twenty-one years ago I was in hospital awaiting the arrival of our daughter; my dear mother-in-law had come up to stay with us to look after our son while the action happened. My husband was going to come in to see me but I rang home to ask him to bring something… this was before mobile phones, so I stood in the draughty corridor outside the ward, on the public telephone.

My mother-in-law-answered the phone… now bear in mind she was quite deaf but wouldn’t wear her hearing aid…

Me: hello mum, it’s Lois.
Mum: Lois isn’t here.
Me: Hello! It’s Lois here
Mum: Lois isn’t here, she’s in the hospital.
Me: I’m Lois! It’s me! I’m Lois!
Mum: I’m sorry but you can’t talk to her, I am her mother-in-law.
Me (good grief!) : Can I talk to Bari please.
Mum: Bari isn’t here, he’s gone to visit Lois, she’s in hospital.
Me: OK, thank you…
Mum: Can I take a message? Can I say who has called?
Me, answering automatically: It’s Lois.
Mum: Lois isn’t here, she’s in the hospital.
Me: Don’t worry! Thank you…

What a lot has happened since then!

A few years back I took my Mothers hearing aid to get fixed. I left it with the secretary who said that the technician was out to lunch but to come back in 2 hours and get it. When I returned back and asked for the hearing aid for Lewis he screamed back at me that it working now thinking that it was for me. At first I almost fainted then started laughing. When I explained his mistake we both laughed our heads off.
