More casting off…

I haven’t mentioned recently my intention to get rid of at least one thing every day this year.. and by get rid of I mean recycling, putting in a charity shop bag, giving to someone else, throwing away… Some things I am just hanging on to for some distant sentimental reason… a red dress I shall never wear again, a cowboy hat which doesn’t fit… and casting away non-material things, casting off  some of the unwanted weight I’ve gained (I hope), try to cast off some of the unhelpful habits I’ve drifted into… nothing dangerous or ghastly, just things like time-wasting, not getting on with chores, faffing, you know, the sort of everyday things!

So yesterday, I decided to give to a charity book shop a cookery book I’m very fond of, but have never actually used for any recipes, and in fact haven’t looked at for months, if not years. It’s called ‘Country Cooking, regional and traditional recipes from Europe and North America.’ As well as recipes, and lots of them, it has photos – modern ones of the dishes, and old ones from a hundred or so years ago. At the start of every region discussed there is an interesting history of the area and a discussion about the traditional produce, foods and ways of celebrating , cooking and eating it!

So why I am I getting rid of it? Well… I’m really not going to use it, and it’s so nice, I’m sure someone else will enjoy it. Although I’ve had it for over thirty years it is still in almost perfect condition – I am very careful with my books and treat them kindly! I’m not going to the charity shop for a few weeks, so I’ll have a farewell look through it – I can always copy down any particularly appealing recipes!

I used to collect recipe books too but rarely used them. Now I look at what I’ve got in stock, think about what I fancy and then if I need inspiration, google for a recipe. I still liek to flick through recipe books when I see them at garage sales etc though – fond memories 🙂

I collect the small little booklets producers sold or gave away… they take up less room, I can use the recipes and they are so interesting! Cookery books I still read/use/enjoy I’m hanging on to (for the moment) but sooner or later they till will gradually depart!
