Twice in as many days I’ve heard a name I’d never come across before, Daegan. The first time I heard it, pronounced Daygan, otherwise I think I might have pronounced it Daggan or Deegan. It was such an unusual name that I looked it up, apparently it is Gaelic according to the various baby-name websites, but Irish or Scottish Gaelic wasn’t made clear; however, from a friend I understand that it may be Cornish! On one site the name is said to mean ‘black-haired’ in Irish… well I had heard that Dubhghall means black-haired or dark-haired but I really have never come across Daegan in any form! I’m sure the name hasn’t a Korean association either, but it is a mountain range along the Korean Peninsula, and can also be a government position. On just one site I found it explained as a popular name in Israel… maybe I should ask my Israeli friend!
So Daegan is a really unusual name – with occasional variations in spelling, especially in Australia where apparently it is a little more common (though still rare) including Daegen, Daegin, Daegon, Daigon and Daygon. However, in the UK, when I checked I found that it’s only really been around since the 1990’s and 2000’s and I can’t find any origin for it – apart from the baby-name site suggestions that it’s Gaelic… and then I found it used as a female name… But only once! I also found it as a vampire character in a book published in 2003.
Although I have never heard the name until recently, I really like it… now I must find a character to give it to!
